The one long-term relationship you need to break off now!

If there’s one relationship that is slowly killing us that needs to end now, it’s our relationship with sugar.

Here’s how my relationship came to an abrupt halt. You may find this quite funny but then you may even relate to it yourself.

I previously spent a week at an intensive world leading health and medical institute over in the US. It was just spectacular. We detoxed, we had blood tests, scans, imaging, thermography, spa therapy, reflexology, chiropractor, kinesiology, stretch therapy, cellular testings, you name it I went through it. It was a major learning all round. Even the food – which was designed as a detox diet was spectacular!  But then I did wander around with a dull headache for the first couple of days as we were totally sugar, gluten, dairy, GMO and fake additives and preservatives FREE for the whole time we were there.

But here’s the thing that really made me sit up and think!

It was such an organic experience we even got to wear totally organic cotton tracksuits, no makeup, hair was a mess everyday and we all looked the same so we were all on the same level. Nice and comfy and doing our own testings.

Then I had my chiro/kinesiology appointment…..

Should I mention here that all the doctors were Spanish and looked like Ricky Martin?

Well they were and my chiro looked like Ricky’s better looking twin, so I was somewhat distracted.

So I’m laying there being treated and feeling like a blimp in my cream tracky, bed hair and makeup free face when ‘Ricky’ said to me…..

You have a relationship with sugar!!!!

WHAT!?

Now I needed to process that. I’m laying on the bed looking at him with a befuddled, confused look of denial on my face as if he’d said ‘You have three heads’.

‘NOooo I don’t think so, my mind was saying, but my face must have had that ‘ewwww whhhaaaat’ expression.  So I think he thought I didn’t hear him.

Ricky (a little louder and clearer now):  NO – You have a relationship with sugar!

Me: ‘ahhh, do I? But I didn’t think I did, I don’t eat that much sugar, I think I’m healthy.  (Deny deny deny).

Ricky:   “I see it clearly and you have a relationship with sugar’.

So I decided I’d do it, write the letter and go cold turkey. From that moment when I walked out of that therapy room, I made a life change. Here’s the letter.

“Dear Sugar.

This is it. It’s time we parted ways.  You’ve kept me in your grip for too long.  You’ve succoured me in at every special dinner party, café and restaurant I can imagine and now I look in the mirror at my waistline and face and see your effects. You’ve laughed at me all these years and quite frankly I now see through your sweet, saccharine ways!  You’re outta here. I want you to pack up your things and go. You’re to take the Lindt chocolate out of the fridge and the pantry, you’re to take all the dried fruit with you, any cookies, the mini magnums and cornettos that I know are at the bottom of the freezer, the last of the ice cream container in the fridge and those last remaining frozen pieces of birthday cake and Christmas pudding that are stashed in the deepest darkest corner of the freezer – they’re to be gone by close of business today.

And quite frankly, sugar, I can live without you and I don’t want you here again.  You don’t care about me, you’re making me fat, you’re ageing me and if I let you hang around and increase your evil ways, you’ll send me down the path of insulin resistance – so pack your bags and go!

I’ll be ok without you!”

So I did it.  I still find myself looking in the fridge from time to time to hunt down something with a sweet taste, but the more good quality fats and proteins I eat I find it reduces that need. My general body health is feeling better and now, because I’ve made simple dietary changes I know the waistline will soon reflect the differences.

But am I 100% sugar free? No. To be honest, I’ll say I’m 85% sugar free. I still like certain fruits, a touch of honey here and there and I need to be diligent with labels, sugar is everywhere.  But it’s happening and I’m loving it.
